Me and Britten

My first main role in an opera was singing the

Cabin boy in The Golden Vanity

At Stockholm Concert Hall with my class from Adolf Fredrik Music School. I was 11 years old.

In the Adolf Fredrik Boys Choir we sang:

A ceremony of carols

A Hymn to the Virgin

Rejoice in the Lamb, where I also sang the Cat Geoffrey

The last big opera role I did as a boy soprano – being 15 years old – was

Miles in The Turn of the Screw

One day I hope I will get to do Quint in the same opera!

As an adult (and tenor) I have sung for example:

A Hymn to the Virgin – many choirs, for example Stockholm Music Gymnasium, S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir, Eric Ericson Chamber Choir

A.M.D.G. – for example with the Vocal Ensemble for the conductor students at the Royal Music Academy Stockholm

Hymn to St Cecilia – for example with Eric Ericson Chamber Choir

Sacred and Profane – with Eric Ericson Chamber Choir at the 75th anniversary concert in February 2020.

Three times I have had the fortune to participate in performances of Brittens War Requiem (2007 with Eric Ericson Chamber Choir in Stockholm Concert Hall, 2015 with Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and Swedish Radio Choir in Berwaldhallen). It is perhaps one of the most profound requiems ever written. The second time I talked a lot with tenor Brian Burrows, who participated in performances with Britten himself as conductor.

As a Tenor soloist:

At the Royal Academy I worked with and performed, the song cycle On this Island

At my exam concert, together with good friend and colleague Anna Graca, I performed

Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac

We also put together a string orchestra and I worked with a horn player at the academy in parts from

Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings

At the Opera Academy I worked with different Britten operas (only parts):
Mr. Upfold, the mayor and the title roleAlbert Herring
Bob BolesPeter Grimes
A NoviceBilly Budd
LysanderA Midsummer Night’s Dream
Prologue and QuintThe Turn of the Screw

Most were role studies, only part of Albert Herring was staged, were I did Mr Upfold, the mayor.

During this time I also sang the tenor part in:

Saint Nicolas – Oscarskyrkan in Stockholm, twice

Serenade (the whole) – with legendary horn player Ib Lanzky-Otto and Uppsala Kammarstråkar

From his chamber music I have also performed:

Canticle I: My beloved is mine

Songs from the Chinese – several times together with great guitarist Per Skareng

Several of his Folk Song Arrangements, with piano or guitar

Right now (November 2020) I’m working with

Winter Words

Together with pianist Ingela Rousu. We were supposed to have given a concert in November, but it was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. I’m working on a recorded version instead, so hopefully I can share it with you here soon!

I do believe I have played something by Britten as well, as a viola player in orchestra (my second instrument, as an amateur!). Probably Simple Symphony or The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. But I can’t remember exactly, it was a long time ago…
