Michael Axelsson comes from Stockholm, Sweden, and was educated at the University College of Opera and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
In addition to his performances as an opera singer, Michael is one of Sweden's most experienced tenor soloists in the oratorio repertoire and has built an extensive concert repertoire. He has received particular acclaim for his engaging portrayal of the Evangelist in Bach's Passions and the Christmas Oratorio.
Among his notable performances are Bach's St Matthew Passion at Martin Luther Church in Dresden, Grote Kerk in Harderwijk, and Uppenbarelsekyrkan in Stockholm; the St John Passion at St. Jacob's Church, Oscarskyrkan, and Högalidskyrkan in Stockholm; the Christmas Oratorio at the German Church in Stockholm, Visby Cathedral, and Lund Cathedral; Beethoven's Missa Solemnis at Sundbyberg Church; Mozart's Requiem at Stockholm Concert Hall and Linköping Cathedral; and Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle at Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan).
His repertoire includes most of the major vocal works of Bach, Haydn, and Mozart, as well as numerous compositions by Handel, Charpentier, Schütz, Dvořák, Rossini, and Mendelssohn. Michael has also performed modern works such as Britten's Saint Nicolas and Serenade, Chilcott's St John Passion (Evangelist), Distler's Choral Passion (Evangelist), and Pärt's Passio (Pilate).
Ensemble singing has played a vital role throughout Michael's musical career. He is a former member of the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and the World Youth Choir, and also performs regularly with ensembles such as the Swedish Radio Choir, Vokalharmonin, and the Royal Palace Chapel Vocal Ensemble.
Since 2020, Michael has been a member of the the Chorus of the Royal Swedish Opera. There he has performed, among other roles, Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Britten), Samuel in The Promise (Löftet, Mats Larsson Gothe), and Giuseppe in La Traviata.
